After days of speculation, on Wednesday the 30th of January Liverpool have finally completed a deal for Inter Milan’s young Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho. The youngster joined the Reds on a 5½-year contract and took the vacant number 10 shirt previously worn by Joe Cole.
In his first interview for the club’s website the youngster already suggested where he will play in Brendan Rodgers’ team. Coutinho said, “I’m a player who likes to make moves and to play along with the attack, passing as well as scoring. I like dribbling and playing near to the box – that is a strength I have.”
With Liverpool lacking a goalscoring attacking midfielder, it seems like that will be the position Coutinho will be used in.
Goals and skills is what Liverpool need, and goals and skills is what Coutinho offers. Before joining Inter, he youngster was seen as the brightest Brazilian prospect alongside Neymar. He was signed to Inter by Jose Mourinho, although The Special One left the club before Coutinho was old enough to join. In his first season at Inter he didn’t settle in well, and with Inter going through a tough time and changing managers mid-season, he struggled.
In 2011/12 the youngster joined Espanyol on loan. He impressed, although injury problems limited his number of appearances for the club to only 16 league games.
Coutnho is undoubtedly a very exciting young player. His skills and eye for goal are something many Premier League defenders will fear. He didn’t develop very well at Inter, but the talent he possesses is obvious to see.
If he manages to fulfill his potential at Anfield, he will be a player many people will wish to have in their team. In Brendan Rodgers, he has the perfect manager to develop him and get his career back on track.
If he manages to settle into the Premier League, he will undoubtedly be a key player for Liverpool’s top 4 dreams.
