Serie A: The Battle For This Season’s Scudetto

90228

12 weeks into the Serie A campaign, we see the defending champions Juventus on top of the League table. We can also see that this season there will be 5 teams in for the fight: Juventus, Inter, Napoli, Lazio and Fiorentina.

Let’s start off with Juventus, the defending champions look like the team to beat so far this year, or do they? Juventus had their 49 undefeated game streak snapped when Inter went into Torino and took all 3 points in a 3-1 win. So are they really the team everyone thinks they are? No, Juventus are 10-1-1 but having only played 2 strong teams, Napoli which they managed to take all 3 points, and Inter – you can’t really say they are the strongest side.

With only 6 points in Champions League, Juventus can see themselves knocked out of the competition if they don’t pull up their socks. On to Inter, for me the strongest side in Serie A so far, I say this because yes they are 9-0-3, but Inter are now a better side from the beginning of the season. With all the injuries and “bad calls” you can’t really say Inter deserved to lose any game. Inter clinched a spot in the Europa League with 2 games left and are now tied for first in Group H with 10 points. If Inter stay healthy and motivated then I believe they have the strongest side and a good chance to win their 19th Scudetto.

Now on to Napoli; for me Napoli isn’t a contender for the Scudetto because they always seem to start off well, and then choke in the end. With a lot of talk in this upcoming transfer window some star players could be departing the club; Cavani and Hamsik seem to be the most talked about of leaving in January. If true, Napoli will surely go down in the standings.

Lazio, we are starting to see a very strong Lazio side, Lazio may not be a Scudetto contender yet, but in the near future they will be on top of Serie A. Lazio are starting to build a very strong side, with Klose and Hernanes in the squad, they need a couple more players to become a real power house in Serie A.

Lastly there’s Fiorentina, a real underdog for the Scudetto. With young talent on this Fiorentina side it’s no surprise they are up in the standings. Stefan Jovetic is the future of this team, along with other young players. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fiorentina do win something this year, I believe this team could potentially win Coppa Italia and even finish with a Champions League spot.

I believe this is how the top 6 will finish come the end of the season.

1. Inter Milan (19th Scudetto)
2. Fiorentina (Champions League)
3. Juventus (Champions League)
4. Lazio (Europa League)
5. Napoli (Europa League)
6. Roma (Europa League)

Marcello Lippi – Can he deliver in China?

Marcello Lippi

From the outside looking in Marcello Lippi has had a very eventful career as a football manager. When he started off in 1982 after hanging his boots up with Sampdoria one wonders if he ever envisaged he would reach the managerial summits he has managed to climb.

To have been senior coach at Atalanta, Napoli, Juventus and Inter Milan is as good a list of Italian clubs to have to your CV as any. Then we have the small matter of him managing the Italian national team not once but twice. Sure he has had his challenges probably most so at Inter Milan and then in his second stint as manager of the light blue “Azzuri” in 2010 when things did not work out the way I am sure he had hoped for. To have won 5 Serie A titles, 1 European Champions League and 1 World Cup counters any criticisms though.

This coupled with the array of coach of the year titles he has won nationally and internationally, confirms why, he was voted in the top fifty managers of all time by the Times of London in 2007.

Today we find the man born in Tuscany in 1948 coaching in China with Guangzhou Evergrande FC. So at 64 years of age he remains as active in the game as ever; and as competitive. It is a long way from those introductory years almost 30 years ago starting off as a youth coach with the aforementioned Genoese team he played most of his career with.

During his playing days Lippi was a strong and uncompromising centre half who could also do a shift for you as a defensive midfielder. However, he was no shining star reflected by the fact he never received any international recognition, major playing awards or interest from any of the country’s top teams.

What he did have was an eye and a nose for team building and tactics. This illustrated in his book “ill gioco delle idée: Pensieri e passioni da Bondo Campo (a game of ideas thoughts and passions from the sidelines).

The Lippi mantra has always till this day been the team is more important than the player. That team spirit is essential. That the players in the team must always play for each other and not themselves. He has always affirmed to the view that the formation of a team is what is important. Not the individual players. No prima donnas for Mr. Lippi!

How he implemented this philosophy in his early days as a manager at Napoli when he had to deal with the genius that was Diego Maradona would be an interesting piece of research to do. It should also not be underestimated that Lippi in his time with Juventus and Italy managed some of the most impressive of players: Vialli, Inzaghi, Zidane, Vieri, Ravanelli, Sousa and Nesta to name but a few.

However, this article is more about Lippi now and his current adventure in China. The erudite silver haired Italian has been in the Orient, located in the Guangdong province in Southern China since May 2012.

Replacing the previous manager of Guangzhou Evergrande Lee Jang Soo for what is planned as a 2 and a half year contract estimated to be worth more than £30m euros. Nice if you can get it but the need to deliver is as strong as it was in Italy in the 1990s when he was delivering trophy after trophy with the “Old Lady” of Italian football.

The Chinese Super League has 16 teams in it and while it is an ever increasingly competitive league coming 2nd is not perceived as on the agenda for Lippi’s new employers. Lippi inheriting a new team that is the current champions and also the Chinese FA Super Cup winners only intensifies this pressure on delivering trophies in his first season in a new country.

It was not always this way though for his new team; the current title was their first super league victory. The team is known as the Southern China Tigers and has been owned by the Evergrande Real Estate Group since February 2010.

Before then the only real interesting fact about this side had been the notorious match fixing scandal of 2006 which when finally assessed saw them demoted from the Super League to Chinese Division 1 for season 2010. A nice start for the new owners! However the Evergrande Real Estate Group had agreed to plough millions into the club in their desire to take it to the top and fans were not to be disappointed despite this immediate set back to plans.

After their take over the new owners purchased the Brazilian striker “Muriqui” for a fee of $3.5m. This new guy hit the ground running with 4 goals in his debut. He was instrumental in them winning the 1st Division and getting automatic re entry to the super league. The next season in the top league he was voted player of the year and again instrumental in their success.

He has had his problems though while in China including a 5 match ban and a petulant response that he wanted to leave and go back to South America for not being treated fairly.

Presently he remains with the club but is a touchy character by all accounts; so one for Lippi to watch out for.

The next big foray into the transfer market was the purchase of striker Cleo a Brazilian Serb for $4.5m whose main claim to fame ahead of coming to China was he had played for both Red Star and Partizan Belgrade; not a club divide often traversed.  Repetitive injuries initially hampered this guy but he seems to have weathered the storm for now.

Then in the summer of 2011 there followed Argentinean Dario Conca an attacking midfielder for a reported $10m fee and a wage packet to boot. This guy too has had his ups and downs with the club often taking the huff when he is subbed before the end of games; to such an extent that a transfer request can follow such action by the coach- both Lee Jang Soo and Lippi falling foul of this behaviour!

Following Lippi into China and Evergrande was the Borussia Dortmund striker “la pantera”; Paraguayan Lucas Barrios joining for a fee of 8.5m euros and another huge salary commanded.

Overall the league has a strong international flavour to it with over 80 players from Serbia, Brazil and various other Latin American and African countries plying their trade. There are also two recent high profile exports from the English Premier League to register. Both of who in recent weeks have hinted at unhappiness in their oriental surroundings.

Evergrande certainly have a few of the more colourful players in their squad for Lippi and his emphasis on “the team” to manage.

On average approximately 20,000 people can be expected to attend one of the 8 super league matches every week. Again though Lippi’s new team along with Beijing Guoan are one of the best supported with average attendances currently reaching 40,000 plus.

So Lippi’s team as I write sits top of the league having played 25 games, won 15, drew 6, lost 4 and amassed 51 pts with a goal average of +21. Nearest challengers is Jiangsu Sainty who has played the same amount of games but is 3 points worse off. These two teams are way out in front for the title with 5 games remaining in the season.

On Wednesday night (26th September 2012) Lippi’s team played the second leg of the Chinese FA Cup semi final against Liaoning Whowin after a home win 1 – 0 in the first leg at the Tianhe Stadium in Guangdong. With a hard fought 2 – 2 draw they have reached the final 3 – 2 on aggregate. This was an important milestone to reach given the desire for success and difficult journeys they have ahead. A final to look forward to is a positive start.

Again it will be a two legged affair with Lippi’s team away from home early November with the return leg at home on the 18th November 12. The other semi balanced at 1 – 1 after the first leg saw Guizhou Renhe take on Shandong Luneng and win on away goals after a similar 2 – 2 draw in the 2nd leg of the tie. Lippi’s team should be favourites for victory.

In the 2012 AFC Champions League matters are more challenging. A 4 – 2 quarter final reverse away from home against Saudi Arabian champions from Jeddah Al Ittihad will need to be overturned on the 2nd October back in China if Lippi is to continue with attempts to emulate his comparable European Champions League success he achieved all those years ago with Juventus. If successful either Sepahan from Iran or Al Ahli from Dubai await for another two-legged affair before the final is played in November 12.

So the next few weeks are going to be interesting for dear Marcello as he tries to navigate through a successful first season in China. Whether domestic league and cup success can be delivered and will be enough will just need to wait and see. Personally this reporter thinks only a triumph in the Asian Champions League will be enough for the club owners and fans alike.

So it is over to you Mr Lippi, your “team” and maybe a couple of your tetchy superstars …

Peanut Butter and Calcio: The Rossoneri’s disappointing start continues

Allegri vs Udinese

Allegri… on the verge of getting sacked?

This weeks installment of Serie A was a low scoring affair all around however teams made the most of it as Juventus, Udinese, Atalanta, Genoa and Siena were the only teams that secured themselves all 3 points this round.

Round 4 of Serie A started off as Parma hosted Fiorentina in a relatively entertaining match up. Both Fiorentina and Parma were awarded penalties in the second half which we’re both kept out of the net until the dying seconds of injury time when the ref pointed to the spot in Parmas favor giving them the last chance of the game to tie it, and that’s exactly what they did. Midfielder J.Valdés stepped up for Parma and netted their only goal of the game ensuring that both Fiorentina and Parma would have to settle for 1 point each.

Saturdays second game saw current Serie A Champions Juventus play host to Chievo. Juventus started off slowly but finally broke through and made sure that they would come away with all 3 points as Fabio Quagliarella found the back of the net twice in a span of 5 minutes.

Many thought that Juventus would have trouble with Chievo when the manager rested key players like Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Barzagli and Sebastian Giovinco due to their mid week Champions League clash with European champions Chelsea. Juventus played well without these players but at times it was a little slippery. Juventus now unbeaten in 43 Serie A games and are alone at the top of the table with a record of 4-0-0.

Majority of sundays games were played to ties when Sampdoria – Torino tied 1-1, Bologna – Pescara tied 2-2 and Catania and Napoli shared points in a goalless game that almost saw Catania steal all three points near the end of the game.

Atalanta defeated Sicilian side Palermo in the dying seconds of their clash when Raimondi scored in the 88th minute stunning Palermo and giving them something to think about on their ride home. Cagliari and Romas game was postponed as Cagliaris stadium was ruled unsafe for spectators – no makeup date has been set as of today.

Lazio vs Genoa finished 1-0 in Genoa’s favor with Marco Borriello scoring the only goal in that game. In my opinion it should have been Lazio who took the win as for the majority of the game it was Lazio who was putting pressure towards the Genoa goal. Genoa goalie Stephan Frey had a very good game and deserved his clean sheet today.

Moving onto Milan vs Udinese where troubled Milan were looking to settle for nothing less than all 3 points because of their horrendous 1-0-2 start to the Season. There was a lot of talk speculating that if Milan were to lose that Massimo Allegri , Milans manager would be sacked and replaced with another manager who many speculate could be Milan and Italian football legend Pippo Inzhagi.

Udinese took the lead in the 40th minute when Ranegie found the back of the net. Hitting back was Stephan El Shaarawy who tied the game in the 50th minute giving Milan fans some hope. Udinese re-took the lead in the 68th minute and who else but skipper Antonio Di Natale through a spot kick. Milan players Zapata and Kevin Price Boateng were both sent off.

Milan were unable to find another goal giving Udinese the win and with Milans troubles continuing they now fall to 15th place in the table and 1-0-3 for the season.

Other Milan club, Inter Milan hosted Siena in the San Siro where fans were expecting Inter to walk all over Siena but in retrospective got totally the opposite of what they were expecting.

Despite Inter playing what seemed to be an amazing game could not find the back of the net as Siena went up 1-0, and never looked back when Vergassola scored in the 73rd minute. Inter fans encouraged their team to push for a equalizer but in the 88th minute Siena put the final nail in Inters coffin as Valiani scored the second and final goal for Siena.

September 26,2012, Week 5 Serie A:

Catania – Atalanta
Chievo – Inter
Fiorentina – Juventus
Genoa – Parma
Ac Milan – Cagliari
Napoli – Lazio
Pescara – Palermo
As Roma – Sampdoria
Siena – Bologna
Torino – Udinese

Serie A Week 4 Player of The Week:

Fabio Quagliarella (Juve) – 2 Goals ( vs Chievo )

Serie A Week 4 Flop Player Of The Week:

Stephan Jovetic (Fio) – 0 Goals ( vs Parma)

Predictions Week 5:

Catania – Atalanta 1-1
Chievo – Inter 2-1
Fiorentina – Juventus 0-3
Genoa – Parma 1-0
AC Milan – Cagliari 0-3
Napoli – Lazio 0-0
Pescara – Palermo 0-2
AS Roma – Sampdoria 2-2
Siena – Bologna 1-0
Torino – Udinese 1-3

Standings:

Chelsea: John Obi Mikel – More sinned against than sinning

John Obi Mikel

For the many who are conversant with the Premier League, you might have heard or seen him before.

But as for us Chelsea fans, we know him as a Pastor who knows his Bible simply because he was the part of the contingent that won us the UEFA Champions League last season. He didn’t play a minor role, but a vital one in the matches against the two giants – Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Mikel Obi came to Chelsea amid controversies. After being voted the second best player after Messi in the Under-20 World Cup in 2005, Manchester United, who has little history of signing black players was at logger heads with Chelsea, which was then being handled by the “Special One” Jose Mourinho. In order not to waste much time, I won’t delve into the main issue that surrounded the signing of Mikel but after the involvement of FIFA, Chelsea won the right of signing him.

Let us go a little down the memory lane. Mikel played at the Under-20  World Cup hosted by Holland as an attacking midfielder. It was in this position that he shown himself as a rising star. He was naturally an attacking midfielder but Mourinho converted him to a defensive midfielder in order to play the position that Makelele excelled in, after he left the club.

I think as a defensive midfielder, these requirements are much needed: Composure, Teamwork, Stamina, Determination, Tackling, Pass Accuracy, Vision and Technique. But this area of the field requires much more physical ability than the mental, and this resulted in Mikel sacrificing much of his creative techniques for the acquisition of the physical ones.

It is indeed a huge sacrifice to see someone who plays in the same position like Fabregas, Iniesta, Ozil etc thrown to the lower region of the field, playing very close with the defenders.

Okay, let me tell you this, as a defensive midfielder, you have to have much of what the defenders have and blend it with the requirements of the midfield. Furthermore, playing as a defensive midfielder as like combining two roles together, this can be seen from the etymological analysis of that compound word: Defensive-Midfielder.

Mikel has always been a subject of criticism among Chelsea fans for his low goal scoring record ever since he signed for the club six years ago. He once said in an interview that he is happy when he see others scoring, he does not have to be the one to score. Sincerely speaking, we fans always want to praise those players who shook the opposition’s net with goals, forgetting the one who created or started the passes that lead to it.

For every goal, there is a beginning of the pass that leads to it. History has it that Mikel has initiated most of Chelsea goals, most recently the second goal scored by Oscar during the match against Juventus. He initiated the play that lead to it, but pundits will never consider that. What if he had decided to play a directionless shot towards the keeper? Well, he didn’t and instead passed the ball which led to that stunning Oscar goal.

What actually prompted me to writing this article is not to say Mikel is a perfect player who does not make mistakes, he is a man like you and I, so mistakes are bound to happen. But each time this guy makes a mistake, we tend to over emphasise it, forgetting those good things he has done for Chelsea. We all want our club to always win every match no matter what, and we pour avalanche of accolades on those players who scored.

Have we ever considered those tackles that lead to dispossession of ball from the opponents that this guy has made? Record has it that during the match against Juventus, Chelsea made 29 tackles and Mikel made most of them. All these could have lead to goals, but we fans don’t give any such consideration.

Now, let us consider the match against Juventus which saw Chelsea, having been leading in the first half, draw at the end. Mikel was said to have caused the second goal, all the football websites, especially goal.com, cast the blame of the second goal on him. In fact, goal.com rated him as the flop of the match.

When I saw this, I was sad and I began to question the rating yardstick of this website. Mikel was the only defensive midfielder against the midfielders studded Juventus side. Juventus paraded five midfielders in their formation against three of Chelsea’s.

The moment I realized this, I told a friend of mine that Mikel will work tonight and people will never appreciate him, as if I had known. Lampard, who is always attacking, left Mikel with a great task of blocking the ever offensive Juventus midfielders.

The pass that actually lead to the second goal was a ball Mikel dispossessed from a Juventus player. He laid the ball on the run for Hazard to catch up, but Hazard, who has been choked by the ever-ready Chiellini, seemed to have lost much strength and could not make any run for it.

Immediately after the match, Mikel apologised saying “If I want to make an excuse, I can, but for me, I gave the ball away. I put my hands up, we move. I am sorry about the mistake but there are no excuses”.

Some hours after this, it was learnt that Mikel has deleted his Twitter account because some fans were racially abusing him as if he was the only person that made mistake that night. David Luiz, John Terry, Ivanovic, and Ramires made more mistakes than Mikel on that night but it was the one Mikel was involved in that made the headlines.

As a faithful fan of Chelsea, if Mikel should leave Chelsea, good clubs will opt for him and then we will appreciate him because as human beings we tend not to appreciate what we have until we lose it.

Juventus: Possible Line-up/Formation For The 2012-2013 Season

Juve's Logo

Possible line-up/formation for this coming season:

Buffon; Bonucci – Barzagli – Chiellini; Lichtsteiner – Vidal – Pirlo – Marchisio – Asamoah; Giovinco – Matri (3-5-2)

Juventus have the best chance to retain the Scudetto in this upcoming season. Juventus have the best defence in Serie A and one of the best defenses in the World. Giorgio Chiellini leads the pack along side Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci. These three world class defenders proved this past Serie A season that they are a force to be reckoned with. With just 20 goals conceded all season, this Juventus defense proved why they are the best.

However, the defense can’t take all the credit with veteran and legend goalkeeper Gianlugi Buffon between the posts for the Bianconero showing his critics that he is nowhere near finished as he was up to his old tricks by stopping 82% of the shots he faced this season; the best save percentage in Europe’s top 5 leagues.

Moving on to the midfield where Juventus dominated last season holding an outstanding 62% of possession in half of there games, the Juventus midfeild gave opposing teams nightmares. Andrea Pirlo “l’architetto” (The architect), the midfield leader for Juventus last season, was given this nickname because of his ability to create scoring opportunities out of nothing. Arturo Vidal, Claudio Marchisio and Stephan Lichtsteiner were last years primary choices for the Juventus XL, but this season, with the addition of Kwadwo Asamoah to the mix, adds even more depth to this already amazing Juventus midfield.

The two frontmen for Juventus this upcoming season will definitely be Sebastian Giovinco and Alessandro Matri occasionally swapping with Mirko Vucinic. Giovinco returns to the Bianconeri after 1 season away at Parma. The Atomic Ant (given this nickname because of his size) proved why Juventus should have never let him go scoring 36 goals for Parma, including a penalty in the very first game against Juventus. In the mix is Alessandro Matri and Mirko Vucinic, who will be fighting for a spot in the starting XL. Both proved last year that they are worthy, but only time will tell of who gets the actual call.

Juventus fans were promised a world class striker before the trade deadline, but with the deadline looming just days away only one man- Giuseppe Marotta- know if the fans will get that promise.

As for the ongoing, off the field issues,  Juventus will be without the man who brought the dream back to life- Mr. Antonio Conte. The Juventus manager will be facing a 10 month ban after being found guilty of failing to report match fixing in the CalcioScommesse scandal.

One thing is for sure though, with or without their leader, Juventus is a forced to be reckoned with and are favourites to retain their Scudetto crown.
