Adam’s Premier League Column: Week 15 – Late drama at Etihad as RVP steals the show

It was goals galore in the Premier League this week, with some top-class football played over the weekend.

Top three games of the weekend-

Manchester City 2 Manchester United 3

Sunday saw the arrival of the much anticipated Manchester derby. Of course titles cannot be won in December, but it enables the winner to send out a message to their rivals of what is to come. Manchester City started the game better, settling into the game quickly and passing the ball about with confidence and fluidity.

United made the Citizens’ possession count for nothing though, as Wayne Rooney’s sliced effort trickled into the bottom corner of Joe Hart’s goal to turn the game in favour of United with sixteen minutes played. The Citizens’ chances of getting back into the game took a further step back, as influential Captain Vincent Kompany was forced off through a groin injury, and was replaced by Kolo Toure, who has had a limited number of games this season.

Wayne Rooney further doubled United’s lead, as he scored his 150th Premier League goal.

The game looked to be out of reach, but there was more drama to come in the second half. Controversial forward Mario Balotelli was given a rare start, and was replaced by Argentine forward and former United player Carlos Tevez after the break, and this signaled a change in approach for Man City.

Yaya Toure installed some hope for City on 60 minutes after he calmly slotted in after some impressive saves from custodian De Gea.

United were then restricted to very few chances, and City finally drew level after right-back Pablo Zabaleta drilled home from just inside the box with four minutes left.

City then had numerous opportunities to snatch a win, but it was United who stole the three points. In the 92nd minute, Manchester United were awarded a soft free-kick, and van Persie dispatched it into the top corner, albeit with a hefty deflection off the boot of Nasri, to send the league leaders six points clear.

Man City were very impressive in this game, with David Silva and Zabaleta putting in crucial performances. This suggests City have enough about them this season, and there is certainly a lot of football to be played.

As for United, they managed to win without putting in a top notch performance, but I still fancy City to clinch the title due to the strength in depth they have in their team, and perhaps their exit from the Champions League will help improve the all-important league results.

Swansea 3 Norwich 4

Chris Hughton’s Norwich are all of a sudden enjoying life in the Premier League this season after picking up some very important wins, and this was a great result against a strong Swansea outfit who are impressing all in the league so far. Defender Steven Whittaker opened the scoring with a well struck effort, before Sebastian Bassong headed in on 40 minutes.

Holt then ensured that the Canaries went in at half time with a strong lead as he made the score 3-0 with a well-timed header. The first half performance was rather unlike the Swansea of late, but in the second half they almost staged a spectacular come-back!

Five minutes after the interval, Michu struck to give the Swans a lifeline. Eight minutes later, Canadian midfielder Jonathan de Guzman slammed in from inside the box to make the home fans start to believe. That belief was cut short though as Robert Snodgrass’ fee-kick found its way in to make the score 4-2 in favour of the away side with thirteen minutes left to play. Michu then halved the lead on 92 mins, but it was too little too late and it was the Canaries who took the three points back to East Anglia.

A reassuring attacking performance from Norwich, and against Swansea, they can take a lot of confidence from this game. It will be interesting to see how Swansea recover from this, but I’m sure manager Michael Laudraup will not let their heads drop.

Everton 2 Tottenham 1

David Moyes’ Everton have enjoyed a good start to the 2012/13 season, and continued in winning fashion against AVB’s Tottenham. Tottenham weren’t at their best, and they didn’t play very impressive football.

It was the second half though that will get everyone talking. On 75 minutes, Clint Dempsey sent the away side cheering with a stunner from long range. Spurs’ defence was still shaky, and could only hold on until the last couple of minutes.

Former Spurs’ man Steven Pienaar scored a rare headed goal for what he thought secured a point for the Toffee’s. However, Nikika Jelavic felt like Everton could snatch all three points, and in the 91st minute sent the home fans into raptures as his shot found the bottom left hand corner of the goal to leave manager David Moyes very pleased.

He told BBC Sport Football, “It is as good a finish as we’ve had. We’ve had a few like that where we’ve lost and felt low so we were due one. The position we are in the table doesn’t shame the way the players have been playing, they have been doing that well.”

Jermain Defoe: Key to Spurs’ top-four bid

tottenham-v-maribor-jermain-defoe-pa_2858049

With bitter rivals Arsenal on the slide and in danger of missing out on an annual Champions League spot, Tottenham Hotspur have the perfect opportunity to retain their top-four spot.

Of course, Harry Redknapp’s Spurs finished last season in a Champions League place, only to suffer the agony of missing out on a seat at Europe’s top table by virtue of Chelsea’s stunning triumph in the competition showpiece in Munich.

Tottenham looked certain to finish third in the Premier League before a late-season collapse, which coincided with Redknapp being linked with the England job. The experienced boss paid for the slump with his job.

Andre Villas-Boas took the reins at White Hart Lane and inherited a squad full of talent. The Portuguese added to his pool of players with a number of eye-catching summer signings, including Hugo Lloris, Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele. However, it is one of the club’s all-time leading goalscorers who has stolen the headlines in the opening months of the campaign.

Jermain Defoe has always had a keen eye for goal and is considered one of the deadliest finishers in the country. He is now 12/1 in the Paddy Power top goalscorer market. This season has the potential to be the most fruitful of his goal-laden career.

Spurs have struggled to find consistency at the start of the Premier League term – Sunday’s heartbreaking defeat at Everton was their sixth in 16 games.

The Toffees leapfrogged Spurs into fourth place, but Villas-Boas’ men remain in a strong position. They are just three points behind third-placed Chelsea and have a solid foundation for the rest of the campaign.

Defoe has led the line on his own in most games, a thankless task for a striker of his size. The former West Ham United and Portsmouth frontman has, however, relished the role, scoring 13 times in all competitions. He could yet form a deadly partnership with Emmanuel Adebayor, who recently returned from a three-match ban.

Defoe’s pace and movement has tormented Premier League defences, while his finishing has been as sharp as ever. The England international has benefited from playing in front of a talented midfield and will profit further as the new-look side continues to gel.

If Spurs are to bounce back from last season’s disappointment and reach the Champions League for only the second time, Defoe will need to maintain his impressive early-season form. The prolific striker has the quality to fire Spurs to glory.

Championship so far: Cardiff

6074233265_5b94d3276f_z

It would be fair to say there was plenty of controversy at Cardiff last season, after the Bluebirds opted to switch their famous blue shirts for a red strip due to commercial reasons.

Such a move came off the back of a playoff defeat although following large-scale investment, most supporters are relatively happy with the decision their foreign owners made. In fact, the investment made into the club seems to already be paying off, with Cardiff regarded as one of the big tips for promotion as they lead the division after twenty one games.

The Results

Having amassed forty four points from their opening fixtures, it doesn’t take a genius to see that Cardiff are well on the way to promotion. While there may have been one or two shaky spells, such periods have been few and far between and have generally lasted for just a couple of games.

Instead, Malky MacKay’s men have dominated the majority of games they have been involved in and the fact they have won every single game at home highlights their success.

At the time of writing, they have won five out of their last six matches and with poor runs being so rare, you really cannot see them giving up their lead at the top and throwing away another promotion chance.

The Summer Buys

Following the investment over the summer, Malky MacKay took full advantage of his additional resources and proceeded to bolster the Cardiff squad in as many ways as possible. Craig Bellamy was probably the most high-profile purchase, with the Welsh international returning to his hometown club for a second time, although fans will have been hoping for more of an impression following a return of three goals in twelve games.

Instead, it’s probably Heidar Helguson who has been one of the more promising attacking buys, with the ex-Watford forward managing seven league goals already. Defender Matthew Connolly has been a surprising hit in front of goal as well and after finding the net on no fewer than four occasions, this summer purchase looks shrewd on a number of levels.

The jury is still out on Joe Lewis, who is yet to start a league game, while the same can probably be said of Kim Bo-Kyung who is taking his time to adjust to English football following his big money move.

Some were surprised when MacKay splashed out around £1m for Craig Noone in the summer yet the former Brighton man has made a sterling impression at Wales and has been a key figure in their promotion push.

The impressive Noone going Gangnam style with summer signing, Kim Bo-Kyung.

Tommy Smith, who was arguably seen as a more encouraging piece of business when he joined, has not yet opened his account, while the same can probably be said of Jordan Mutch who has also struggled since his switch from Birmingham.

The Verdict

Many people were intrigued as to how Cardiff would perform this time around, after seeing their squad undergo so many changes over the summer.

On current viewing, it looks as though MacKay’s men are firm favourites for promotion and it really is difficult to pick any faults in their team.

They have yet to sustain any sort of poor form, while on paper they are also very strong and this leads me to think that nobody will even come close to challenging the Bluebirds for that top spot.
