Darren Bent: Villa Star Rightly Benched By Lambert

Darren Bent could certainly find himself leaving Villa Park in January with a number of clubs happy to have a player with his goal scoring record on their books, but is Paul Lambert right to be leaving him out of an Aston Villa side currently in a relegation battle?

Lambert once a winner of the European Cup in his time playing with Borussia Dortmund has come under a lot of scrutiny over the decision to drop Darren Bent, however, this decision seems to be paying off with summer signing Christian Benteke making the headlines with excellent all round performances.

In his time at Norwich Paul Lambert built a side which were difficult to break down and grinded out results with hard work and determination. I was surprised to see Lambert leave the Canaries in the summer and with Aston Villa selling a number of top class players in recent years there is a big job to do at Aston Villa and Paul Lambert is improving the side week in week out.

In the modern game you can buy all the superstars that you want but that can’t guarantee they will do the job needed. It’s difficult to fault the job that Lambert is doing at Aston Villa even if that does mean dropping Darren Bent. He has made some excellent signings this season with Ashley Westwood being the stand out signing in midfield.

Last season Westwood was playing League Two football with Crewe Alexandra however now he is the main man in the Aston Villa midfield and has excelled in recent weeks. Westwood epitomises the modern day midfielder. He is comfortable in possession, good defensive work, has a great passing range and also great vision.

In the England squad in recent years England have lacked a midfielder like Westwood and I would certainly not be surprised to see the 22 year old in Roy Hodgson’s squad in the future.

I agree with the omission of Darren Bent at Aston Villa from Paul Lambert. I can’t remember when I last saw Darren Bent in fine goal scoring form and has also failed to make the last two major England squads for 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. Over the last months the front three of Weimann, Agbonlahor and Benteke have gained a great understanding in the final third of the pitch which is starting to pay dividends for Villa.

The Belgium striker has adapted really well to Premier League football in his first season and his overall contribution to the side is part of the reason why Darren Bent is in the side.

Bent is a finisher, you can give him the ball in the 18 yard box and there is 90% chance he would score where as Benteke gets more involved with the squad on the pitch.

Against Manchester United Benteke was fantastic and Aston Villa were lucky not to come away from the game with a least a point. Benteke ran Chris Smalling ragged throughout the whole game and was also excellent against Arsenal in the 0-0 draw and scored the late goal which gained his side a massive three points against Reading.

What happens in January? No-one can tell the future, but it does seem like Darren Bent could be on the way out of Villa Park however Villa won’t be short on takers for the England striker. Lambert finds bargains and top class players in every league in England which some top managers can’t do.

Selling Bent for about £10 – £15 million could benefit Lambert and Villa’s relegation battle only if the money was used to sign other players in January.

Antonio Cassano: Inter Milan’s Little Magician

hi-res-153116834_crop_exact

So far this season Antonio Cassano has racked up 5 goals and 5 assists in all competitions and has recorded over a 1000 minutes in 17 appearances but like all great players, it is impossible to judge Cassano’s contribution to the team by statistics alone. What Cassano really offers is so much more than that.

Cassano arrived at the club in the summer just before that end of the transfer window in a deal with cross town rivals AC Milan. Inter took on Cassano in exchange for Giampaolo Pazzini and €7 million. This in itself represented good business.

Pazzini was incredibly keen to leave Inter after a poor season and little playing time add to that Cassano is considered the more talented of the two players and it looks as though things were looking promising in the transfer market compared to last season’s disaster.

As for Inter, in a tactical sense, they desperately needed someone to take the creative pressure off Wesley Sneijder who over the past two seasons had struggled to fit into the tactical plans of the previous managers as well as suffering from a string of niggling injuries that reduced his amount of performances.

On the pitch Cassano has developed a fantastic understanding with Inter’s other forwards, Diego Milito and Rodrigo Palacio. So far this season when they have played together they have managed to look incredibly dangerous in a way that Inter have lacked since the treble winning season.

So far, so good you might think, however, this over reliance on one player from an attacking point of view has begun to resurface again but this time Cassano has found himself at the centre of the debate.

After Inter’s recent home game with Cagliari, which finished 2-2, Cassano was incensed by the referee’s decision to wave play on after a pretty blatant foul on Ranocchia in the penalty area. This incident led to Cassano receiving a 2 match ban which kept him out of the Parma match and will mean he misses the home game against Palermo.

Add this to the fact that Sneijder is the subject of a pay dispute and has thus been frozen out of the squad means that Inter are lacking creativity around the edge of the penalty box. As resent results have shown this Inter team need someone who can create goals in what is otherwise a very hard working and industrious squad but one that struggles to break teams down.

What this does prove is just how important Cassano has made himself to the team. It isn’t even Christmas yet and already he has become almost central to how Inter perform and whether they are able to bring home 3 points.

Premier League Betting Preview and the Best Tips: December 1

Trophy_Tour_Manchester_012

Right so here we are with a third matchday in a week, and let’s face it – we’re all feeling the effects of a couple of intense matchdays in close succession, perhaps experiencing niggles and moaning to the gaffer whilst pleading for a few days off. Just me? Never mind then. On we go with the fixtures with the best odds and tips provided by FREEbets.org.uk.

In the early kick-off, Saturday’s melting pot that is the capital city opens the weekend’s proceedings with the first of two London derbies. Chelsea, still waiting for their first win under beleagured boss Rafa Benitez, visit West Ham in what should be an industrial affair to say the least. Chelsea have had their critics, but undeniably they have tightened up in defence of late, which means the likelihood of winning is increased from scoring a solitary goal.

That may well suffice today against a West Ham side for whom the goals are drying up and Andy Carroll is an injury doubt.

Tip – Chelsea 1-0

Hopping from West to North, and Arsenal host Swansea at the Emirates in what should be a showcase of crisp passing, attractive play and pretty little patterns of non-shooting football. It would be expected that Michael Laudrup will utilise a counter-attacking strategy to which Arsenal have been susceptible so far this season, albeit against superior opposition in Chelsea and Schalke.

The Swans, buoyant after beating the Baggies in midweek, have been increasingly effective on the break as the season has gone on and Michu may be the main beneficiary as Arsenal try to recoup after two succesive tough away games.

Tip – Michu Anytime Goalscorer

London derby Mk II as Fulham host Tottenham, and its sub-plots aplenty as a swathe of players meet up with old friends. Berbatov against his former employers. Dempsey at his old stomping ground. Defoe versus his second-favourite manager after ‘Arry.

All the aforementioned look potent, and with both teams right in the goals it seems sensible enough to expect goals.

Tip – Fulham vs Tottenham Over 2.5 Goals

Liverpool face the Saints at Anfield, and Nigel Adkins’ men have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes of late and can smell Aston Villa above them in the safety holy grail of 17th place. Liverpool had quietly built an eight-match unbeaten run before succumbing at White Hart Lane on Wednesday.

Their problem – amongst others – is asserting themselves against teams they ought to beat, and with a fearless Southampton gaving already boasted goalscoring feats at the Etihad, Emirates and home to Manchester United and Tottenham, Pep Reina may well be plucking the ball out of his net at least once today.

Tip – Southampton to score

The title is going to Manchester. And that’s a fact. Both the Mancunian clubs can assert their superiority in their respective matches with the Derby a mere week away. Everton have given City a headache on more than one occasion of recent, yet the requisite grit City will need to overcome dogged opponents was on show at Wigan midweek. Everton will be missing Baines and that could see them surrendering the wings through which City penetrate so often.

United, meanwhile, continue rumbling on, with goalscoring threats coming out of their ears. It was Van Persie’s turn on Wednesday, and with Anderson pulling the strings with added venom, even an improving Reading may not be able to resist.

Tip – Manchester City/United double

The Redknapp Saves Roadshow rolls up at Loftus Road as ‘Arry could hardly have wished for a better first home game as QPR’s 26th new manager in 26 years. His team are superior in talent and pace to Aston Villa, however there are not many clubs around who have a roster of players that will work as hard for their boss as the Villa boys for Paul Lambert. He has got an admittedly raw and/or limited bunch grafting, and that should be requsite for survival.

For the match however, if Redknapp can motivate his players to show their quality, work as hard as they did at Sunderland on Tuesday, and keep the powerful Benteke quiet, then three points should be theirs. Double QPR up with a West Brom side who should get back to winning ways against a Stoke side devoid of a toothless Peter Crouch and likely to leak goals against the pace of fellow Peter Odemwingie and guile of Shane Long.

Tip – QPR/West Brom Double
