Real Madrid: Possible Line-up/Formation for the 2012-2013 Season

Real Madrid Logo

The current reigning Spanish Champions are tipped to have another outstanding season. The men from Madrid have not started the season quite as perfectly as they would have preferred, but their draw with Valencia is nothing to be ashamed of.

I will now be running down the possible/probable Real Madrid first XI for the 2012/13 season. I will also discuss the fringe players and the tactics that they will adopt in most matches.

The Real Madrid probable starting XI:

GK: Iker Casillas
Casillas is one of the few players in world football that is always assured a place in the starting XI. Casillas is also not just there to fill the position, he is the best Goalkeeper in the world. For anyone to take his place he would have to be an extremely great player.

LB: Marcelo
Marcelo might miss a couple more matches because of his involvement in the 2012 Olympics, but before long Marcelo will be back in the Madrid first XI and busy exciting fans with his amazing link up play with Cristiano on the left wing.

CB: Kepler Lima “Pepe”
Pepe was the best defender in the EUROs and will definitely project that success onto his club performances. He is very physical and a solid player that any manager would love to have at the back.

CB: Sergio Ramos
Sergio Ramos is almost as certain as Casillas to be included in the starting XI for each match. The current 2nd captain has great performance after great performance. Ramos is very fast for a defender and can keep up with any striker, he is also dangerous in the air and always a danger at corners.

RB: Alvaro Arbeloa
The Spanish defender has been criticized a lot regarding his performances, but Mourinho has proven his trust in him by not buying Maicon from Inter and a regular position on the team this season will surely grant him the chance to prove himself as a world-class right-back.

CM: Xabi Alonso
No player in world football can control a match like Xabi Alonso. Every match he makes passes that causes a persons jaw to drop immediately. He works harder than any other CM when it comes to defence. He has also gotten more involved in the attacking part of the game and has a long shot that any keeper would think twice about saving.

CM: Luka Modric
Although Luka Modric has not signed for RM yet, the transfer seems to just be a matter of time. When the deal is finalised Modric will be a permanent fixture in the team and will line up next to Xabi Alonso in the midfield. He was Tottenhams best player last season and will only get better playing along the best players in the world.

CAM: Mesut Ozil
Mesut Ozil is an artist. He organizes the most deadly attack in world football. Three players with more than 20 goals in one season and this man created most of them. Ozil has the type of vision that cannot be taught, he is blessed with the natural ability, to not just see space, but to play the perfect pass into it time after time. The only “problem” with Ozil is that he plays only 80 minutes almost every match.

RW: Angel Di Maria
Angel Di Maria missed most of last season through injury, but since his return he has looked 5 times the better player. He seems to be more confident, skillful and enthusiastic than he has ever been. He has developed a great eye for goal and has seen a couple of screamers end in the back of the net in the past couple of weeks.

ST: Karim Benzema
Higuain and Callejon are threatening, but neither will take the place of the 24 year old Frenchman. Karim Benzema plays his absolute best when he and Cristiano drift in and out of each others positions. Benzema might not always look it, but he is very fast. He is a proven goalscorer and at just 24 he still has time on his side.

LW: Cristiano Ronaldo
I left the most dangerous player for last. Cristiano Ronaldo was the second top scorer in La Liga last season and was equal top scorer in the EUROs. He did not score in the season opener against Valencia, but expect him to open up his account very soon. CR7 doesn’t go long without scoring and will probably continue to exceed all expectations and shatter a lot more records this season.

Fringe players:
Most of these players will most probably feature sometime this season, but might not make the starting XI very often.

Raphael Varane:
The 19-year old CB is regarded very highly by Mourinho, but because of his age he will be a second backup (After Raul Albiol) and might not get a lot of playing time. He might be loaned out for game time.

Sami Khedira:
The German international had his best season for Real Madrid last season and was almost a guaranteed starter at the end of last season, but with the imminent arrival of Luka Modric at the Bernabeu Khedira will be spending a lot of time on the bench.

Jose Callejon:
Callejon was RM top goalscorer in preseason, but unfortunately he will still be regarded as a third choice striker for the biggest part of the season. He can score a lot of goals and seems to never crack under pressure. He is an excellent player to have in an emergency.

With these players and those I left out (Higuain, Coentrao, Albiol and Diarra to name a few) Real Madrid will definitely be a huge force to reckon with and are surely favorites to retain their La Liga title.

FC Barcelona: New Signings and Possible Line-ups/Formations for the 2012-13 Season

The Barca Logo

FC Barcelona have been, for the past years the best team that has played the game. Entertaining people with their drooling style and engaging Tiki-Taka, winning all the trophies around them in the process. But last year Barca have lost their winning track by losing the two most important trophies; the UCL and La Liga. This year they hope to retain their trophies by strengthening their squad under new manager Tito Vilanova, and they are doing so with the addition of left-back Jordi Alba from Valencia and recently defensive midfielder Alex Song from Arsenal FC.

With these new signings, Barca and football fans started asking; “How will Barca line-up next year with the new players?” “Is there enough space for all players?” I will answer all these questions critically.

Barca 2011/12 Standard Line-up:

Valdes

Alves Puyol Pique/ Mascherano Adriano/ Abidal*

Sergio Busquets

Xavi           Iniesta

Alexis Sanchez Fabregas/ Pedro/ David Villa*

Messi

All players with “*” Have been injured for a long period last season.

Note: Fabregas when playing, was positioned as a CAM and not at LW.

Barca In:

Jordi Alba (Valencia)
Alex Song (Arsenal)

Barca Out:

Seydou Keita (To Dalian Aerbin)

Barca 2012/2013 Possible Line-Ups

Barca could line up in several ways and formations-

4-3-3:

Valdes

Alves   Puyol   Pique/ Mascherano   Alba

Sergio Busquets

Xavi          Iniesta

Alexis Sanchez/ Fabregas (As CAM) David Villa

Lionel Messi

Barca could also play as 3-4-3 to benefit from Alexis Sanchez and Fabregas:

Valdes

Alves     Puyol/Pique/Mascherano      Alba

Sergio Busquets

Xavi                     Iniesta

Cesc Fabregas

Alexis Sanchez               David Villa

Lionel Messi

Alex Song technically has no place in Barca’s line-up¸ and that is what has made some Barca fans furious, as in “Why would FC Barcelona want to buy a player that is just going to sit on bench?!”

Song may just have a place in the squad in replacing Sergio Busquets, if he is injured or if he has gone back to play as CB to replace an injured Pique or Puyol. So Alex Song will have to cope with the bench most of the season, unless Tito Vilanova will just flip around all the squad and formation just to find a place for Song (like playing in a 4-2-2 formation), but this is very unlikely to happen. This  formation especially with the addition of Song could affect Barca’s winning odds this season, and so sportsbook review could prove to be a useful resource in covering the Catalan’s odds and chances of a successful season.

Alba on the other hand should have a lot of playing time with the absence of Abidal. Then there will be another story.

Note: The Transfer Window has not closed yet, Barca might as well sell some players that don’t fit in Tito’s plan for next year.

Barca Possible Departure(s):

Ibrahim Afellay (Inter, Arsenal, Liverpool)
Andreu Fontas

Thank you for reading.

Lowdown on Chelsea target- Olympique Marseille’s Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta- Targeted by Chelsea

Reports in France suggest that an agreement was meet on a transfer fee between Marseille and Champions League holders Chelsea for right back Cesar Azpilicueta. Chelsea had been tracking Azpilicueta for the majority of last season and raised their interest on hearing that Azpilicueta had not been included in the squad for Marseille’s Europa League match versus FC Sheriff Tiraspol.

Marseille have recently indicated this Summer that they were going to reduce the wage bill by selling some of their key players. Alou Diarra was the only recognised departure but the club expressed that key members of squad such as Stephane Mbia, Andre Ayew and Cesar Azilicueta would also leave.

“If my departure can help Marseille’s finances, then it is a good deal for everyone concerned.” – Cesar Azpilicueta.

The deal is worth to be near £8 million for the 22 year old. The transfer will take Chelsea’s spending up to £70 million this Summer following the signings of Marko Marin, Eden Hazard and Oscar. Cesar will increase the options in the right back position for the Blues.

The first choice right back is Ivanovic who actually played 14 of his 26 appearances in centre back due to injuries and suspensions so it is clear that cover is needed. Ivanovic will be difficult to dismantle from his starting berth after having an eventful start to the season that includes two goals and a red card in the Community Shield.

Azilicueta is yet another example of an modern attacking full back (see Alexander Buttner: A lowdown on Manchester United’s latest signing for more) and he played in Spain’s disappointing Olympic campaign which lead to knockout at the group stages. It was more of a case of the forwards not living up to their expectation as Cesar was part of the Spanish backline that only conceded two goals in three games.

Cesar Azilicueta made his Champions League debut with Marseille against Spartak Moscow and has improved his game considerably in Ligue 1 leading him in contention for the Spanish national team squad. Cesar understandably feels loyalty to Marseille who supported him through injury when the Spaniard ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments in his knee. – “My thoughts are split between Marseille and Chelsea”.

Azilicueta began his career at Osasuna beginning as an attacking midfielder but moving to full back due to injury crisis at the club. And the rest as they say is history. A regular at Osasuna at only 18 years of age. A Basque native, he thrives on aggressive football but complements his passion on the field with his ball skills and intelligence in forward positions. Surprisingly Cesar established as a right back despite favouring his left foot.

Cesar Azilicueta will look to gain a starting position at Chelsea and improve Chelsea’s 1.21 goals against average last season and improve on last seasons sixth place finish. If he can follow in the footsteps of fellow Spaniard Juan Mata debut season which included the FA Cup and Champions League double then Chelsea could have a real talent in a rejuvenated side.
