I have to say that I pretty much agree with your assessment, although I would have included Paul Robinson in place of Robert Green. John Ruddy has probably, pound for pound, been the best 'keeper in the Premier League this season.

I would also have taken Der Crouchmeister instead of Defoe (I know that he and Carroll are similar in style to each other, but Crouch is better on the ground and both are battering-rams). I think that Roy Hodgson has taken a gamble including Danny Wellbeck in the squad as a foil for Rooney; what use will either player be if England are knocked out after the first two games?

Even players like Gerrard and Torres were played in a system/formation that got the best out of them. Prior to Rafa coming to Liverpool Gerrard scored an average of 8-9 goals a season and this tally more than doubled when he was played on the right and also in a free role behind the striker. Even Carragher’s performances improved in the zonal defence system which didn’t expose his lack of pace and we had the best defensive record as well as a record amount of clean sheets under our multiple Golden Glove award GK Reina.

Anyway let me just finish off with a checklist:

Winning LaLiga twice against the 2 Goliaths despite the disparity in revenue. Check
PL experience and success of finishing regularly in the top 4. Check
European experience and success winning the CL and UEFA Cup with 2 different teams. Check
Knowledge of modern tactics to outwit stronger opponents. Check (and against Mourinho, Ferguson and Wenger on quite a few occasions never mind our European conquests).
Ability to get the best out of a team with limited resources, astuteness in the market place, revamping academy, strong competitive nature, self-belief, resolve and mental/emotional strength to deal with critics/media and winning mentality: Check, check, check, check, check…..

Rafa is a born winner: Winning La Liga twice and a UEFA Cup with Valencia in one of the best leagues in the World I may add; CL against all odds (as well as getting to another final), FA Cup, Charity Shield, Super Cup, highest League finish and points tally since we last won the League 20 years ago, consistent top 4 finish, record clean sheets, getting voted No.1 in UEFA Co-efficient rankings with memorable wins against Barca, Real, Chelsea, Man U, Inter, AC Milan and etc. and you have what some selectively fail to see, the best manger we have ever had in decades.

To even mention Martinez, Rijkaard, AVB and Rogers in the same breath is an insult to the man.
The mutual parting to save the Club any more financial losses, his emotional attendances at the Hillsborough Memorials, the generosity of giving back to the community in the form of charities even though he was unemployed and the Love of the city and its community is testament to the man.

Let us not forget the money he recouped from getting us into the Champions League and to the latter stages as well. Most of that was pissed down the drain to pay of the interest payments which hampered any chance of building on our success.

Many managers would have wilted under the pressure he had from the media, the "fans", the internal boardroom staff and the 2 nightmare owners.

We talk about how we should have won the League. Should have??? We were overachieving with a net spend and squad depth that was incomparable to our rivals. We were only as great as our first 11 and beyond that we did not have the resources to compete and that is the fact. If Torres and Gerrard hadn't been injured half the time we probably would have won the league that season despite all the problems or a rant which the media comically blames for our loss of form in the 2nd half of the season. The truth is with Europe, 2 Cup competitions and a push for the top 4 all to consider we could not afford to compete with teams that had longer to settle or that can afford 20-30 million class players every season.

You can go on about the net spend of Wenger and Ferguson but how much longer did they have to build their teams, youth and ideology.

It also goes without saying, if we had recruited Daniel Alves for approx 12 million, Ronaldo when he was 17 before United had a look in and a whole host of other players at the time which Parry and the Board stalled on we won't be in the mess we are in. So if we could only go after 2nd/3rd choice, bargain basement players because there were so many areas to fix or because the Board had no sense of urgency in bringing in World Class talents or prospects we have to be realistic in our expectations.

Many people also blame him for selling Alonso. Many forget that it was Rafa who got him for a bargain in the first place and it was Alonso who handed in the transfer request at the end of his last season. To put things into perspective we made 19 million profit on a player that underperformed for 3 seasons before Rafa talked about signing competition.

It was only after he lit a rocket up his arse did he play his best ever season in a Red shirt. If you were Spanish and were sought after by the best ever European team, never mind Spanish team, improved wages, less tax and had a wife who may have liked the thought of moving back to their home country would you not consider it? Alonso loves our team but let's not put all the blame on a manager, player relationship. Realistically, how many people have you worked for that you could call a mate!!

A few seasons ago, Denilson was overtaken by the referee in a counter attack, think it was against Manure.
Against Norwich, in the first goal, Ramsey was jogging just behind the man in the hole, not even trying to catch or pick up his man.
On the other goal, he was just jogging behind the man with the ball, not even trying to catch up.
Either he's not motivated enough or he's been played outta position, either ways he's not giving his best in games

It is a very good post.
Very well said by the writer, with the various teams at his disposal throughout our time at the Emirates Wenger is the only guy who could get where we are. And more-over he's is the only manager who has taken so much criticism on his back and still given us a great way. In fact even after we came to the Emirates we competed for our first champions league final.
But still having said all this. I guess there are a few areas where he should definitely work on and the most important i believe is criticizing the officials after every game. I believe he should stop that, even if Arsenal is the club most affected by this. For eg if we talk about the last game, he again targeted the officials on the penalty shouts and challenges, this makes the players feel they had a good game and they tend to repeat their mistakes over and again.
He should rather have blamed it directly on the poor defensive display by our team.
And second is playing out of form players over and again and also out of their positions. Aaron Ramsey has played at four different position in this campaign and this is really a shock.
But i believe Wenger can sort this out for sure.
In Arsene I trust.

agreed. wenger is the right man. however, chamakh, park, arshavin - have all been terrible disappointments this season. wenger did not build his reputation with this type of player. walcott remains very inconsistent, why can't we get regular match-winning performances from him? why do we depend so much on arteta? without him we simply cannot win. we used to at least challenge for four trophies, but not any more. in fact this season we failed to mount any challenge at all on any front. wenger does need to put this right and quickly.

Finally a really logical and clear post Ohhhhh AlMasri...couldn't have said it better myself. The AAA's and Wenger out crowd, just like the AKB's are a bunch of narcissistic whiners or blinkered rose coloured believers. We do have a middle ground and 99% of the Gooners fall there. they appreciate AW but want to see results and I can't fault them. They are faithful to the Gunners but feel like jilted lovers when we see them play a half like this weekends first. All in all a very good article.

Ohhhhhh Almasri...a fair enough assessment and probably a justified conclusion but it is unfair and AAA like to say we were obliged to play him because our squad doesn't have depth. We have Wilshere,Arteta and Frimpong gone, 3 top class midfielders and Coquelin is very inexperienced but promising so we have the depth when all our backups aren't crocked....yet we still will get 3rd and a CL place....give credit where credit is due.
