Vertonghen linked (again)- Should the Gunners go for him this summer?

Thursday, February 16, 2012

Arsenal have been linked with Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen for the past year and a half, and it has been reported that the 24 year old will cost £10 million. Although the versatile stopper, who can also play left back, has reportedly ‘declined’ a new contract; is there actually any point of him coming to the Emirates this summer?

As much as I'd like to see Jan come to the Emirates, I can’t see it happening as Arsene has put a lot of faith into Gibbs and knows how much of a talent he really is. He also has Jenkinson, Coquelin and Yennaris who are all young versatile players, who will work 100% wherever they play.

Arsene Wenger has said in an interview this week, that the club will need to make at least £10 million before they can spend a penny, but with the ticket prices being raised this year and the team not playing as good as they should be, there have been more and more empty seats in the home games.

Jan would be perfect for Arsenal, as he is already the captain at Ajax and has played with fellow Belgium International Thomas Vermaelen at both club and international level. But Laurent Koscielny has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League this season and with Per Mertesacker finally finding his feet, it will be hard for the 24 year old to play in the middle.

Vertonghen and Vermaelen... will they be training as Gooners next season?

However, Kieran Gibbs has had a major hernia problem which is not normal for a player as young and as fit as he is, so he could be a replacement for the young English international. Santos, our other left back, has been criticized ever since he’s been at Arsenal for not being able to ‘defend’ as well as the others, along with suffering and currently sidelined with a long term injury, so Vertonghen could be a good fit at left back.

What do you think? Should the Gunners go for him?

Jan Vertonghen IS the captain of Ajax. Not vice-captain.

Thank for your lovely comment, it's been corrected.

Now, based on your expertise, should we go for him or not?

Cheers,

Omar

Well, I wrote a transfer report on him a few weeks ago and I was very positive back then but I simply don't think Arsenal has the funds. Surely, they have 10m to pay the fee but I don't think a defender should be our first priority. First we should go for a class midfielder or striker and then focus on a fullback/defender. If Arsenal wants a left or right back then they should not sign Vertonghen, as he prefers CB and doesn't want a full-time roll as leftback.

I do think Vertonghen would be a good (extra-)signing. But I just don't think he will be a first-team player because we already have Koscielny, Vermaelen and Mertesacker and they are good enough. Vertonghen is still a great and versatile player but not a player we REALLY need.

I'm not sure really. I think we need a good midfielder or striker more than we need a good defender. But if we NEED a defender I'd definitely would go for Vertonghen. First choice.

Sorry for the long comment. Got carried away, obviously.

Cheers

Thanks Austin for the excellent feedback and response, much appreciated.

I agree, especially with Bartley coming back, I'm not sure if we should be going for another defender.

We need to shore up our midfield and attack.

Cheers,

Omar

I agree. I was thinking about Bartley when I was writing my last comment. He is very talented aswell and will be a good defender for us in the future. As I said, a good striker or midfielder should be our first priority. RvP won't be happy if we only sign a defender in the summer....

Good article though, TotallyArsenalM
