No one needs to be told about the sheer quality of Robin Van Persie, he is regarded as one of the greatest strikers in the world, maybe only behind the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
The Dutch master has been in top form this season and has been linked with a move away from the Emirates as his contract comes to an end next summer. He has refused to talk about a contract extension until the end of the season, and some believe that this will be due to qualification in the Champions League and/or some marquee signings.
Without a world-class backup, Robin has been relied on a lot this season, with his contribution of goals, his strong leadership and his determination to be a winner, maybe some qualities that haven’t been seen in some of the other squad members.
He has a reputation of being injury prone, and Wenger refused to take advantage of the January transfer window. So if he does get injured, and with the King returning to his parent club New York Red Bulls on Thursday, who will be the best candidate to replace him? Walcott through the middle? Chamakh? Park?
Sounds disastrous doesn’t it? With a bit of luck, something Arsenal doesn’t seem to have when it comes to injuries, Robin can see the season through. However we will NEED to make use of the Summer transfer window, regardless. Let’s take a look at some possible replacements (if he does decide to leave) or back-ups, that Arsenal have been linked with:-
Gonzalo Higuain:
The Real Madrid forward is regarded as one of the best strikers in La Liga, but with the form of Karim Benzema, and a team bursting with talent, the Argentinean has struggled to keep a starting place. However, the stats speak for themselves, in 21 appearances this season, Gonzalo has started 9. He has scored 14 goals in 40 shots, and at the age of 24, he still has a few years to hit his peak. Like Van Persie, he doesn’t have the greatest pace, but a clever, footballing brain. His positioning is great and finishing deadly.
In my opinion, Higuain would fit perfectly into the system that Arsenal play, with bursts of pace down each flank, and through balls that leave you finding yourself picking your jaw up, Higuain has all the assets to become a legend at Arsenal.
However, I can only see him moving from Real to get more playing time and if Van Persie remains a Gunner and fit, I’m pretty sure that Higuain will have to watch from the bench. A great replacement, but cannot see him as a back-up.
Lukas Podolski:
Earlier in his career, the German International was tipped to become one of the best strikers in the world. But after two average seasons at Bayern Munich, Podolski felt it was time to return to his hometown of Cologne. Where, this season, Podolski has rekindled his form after being involved in 19 goals in 18 games, scoring 15 and 4 assists.
The 26-year old has recently hinted a move away from FC Cologne in the Summer and recent speculation has seen him being linked with a move to the Emirates. Pacey and a very powerful left foot has seen Podolski play down the left for Germany. But for FC Cologne he is used as the main striker and this seems to be where he is at his best.
Podolski would be a good addition to the Arsenal squad but whether a replacement or as a back-up remains to be seen.
Matias Suarez:
Rumour or not, Matias Suarez has been said to have signed a pre-contract with the Gunners and will be moving to the Emirates this summer. The 23-year old is a versatile forward and has been known to ply his trade on either flank, or as a lone striker. He is very pacey and has an eye for goal, assets that sound very Wenger like to me. With 10 goals in 24 appearances, the Argentinean has a lot of potential.
And where better for young players than Arsenal and Wenger? I would like to see him at the Emirates as a back-up, but not as a replacement for RVP. He is not experienced enough and the English Premier League is a big step up from the Belgian league. One for the future- yes. But a proven world class replacement would be needed if Van Persie was to depart.
In my opinion, Higuain would be the perfect replacement, and with Van Persie being linked to Real Madrid, could Wenger push through a swap deal? It remains to be seen, but expect Arsenal to make some movement in the summer transfer window.
