Chelsea may not be able to avoid an early exit from the Champions League, after sinking to a 3-1 defeat in Naples, yesterday evening.
The Blues were overrun by a confident attacking performance from Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi, who claimed one and two goals respectively to give the Italians the advantage heading into the second leg. Those looking at the Betfair football odds will know Chelsea have a lot of work to do.
Andre Villas-Boas' Chelsea have now failed to find a positive result in five outings, a run of bad luck that will have the Blues brass frowning at the back pages, this morning.
Chelsea's last win was on January 28, when they defeated local rivals, QPR, by a single goal in the FA Cup. Low-scoring draws with Norwich, Birmingham, and Swansea, and a heavy loss to Everton are just some of the more embarrassing moments on Chelsea's form sheet.
Villas-Boas appears to have started last night's match at the Stadio San Paolo on the back foot, after demoting Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, Michael Essien, and Fernando Torres to bench-warming duties.
The ongoing absence of John Terry, who is out for eight weeks with a knee problem, meant that Chelsea were hobbled at the back against Napoli. "Without John, a very important player for the team, we have suffered a lot of goals recently", Villas-Boas conceded.
Juan Mata opened the scoring for Chelsea at the 27th minute – a confident strike, but one at odds with the run of play; Napoli had been on top for much of the first half, with only a sterling effort from Petr Cech denying Cavani. People looking at the Champions League betting will have been expecting a Napoli goal sooner or later.
Napoli equalised just before the break. Lavezzi walked past a helpless Raul Meireles to slot home from distance. The Italians' second came at the stroke of half-time, when Cavani connected with a ball sent over the top of the Chelsea defenders.
Lavezzi completed Napoli's three-goal rout of the Blues just after the hour. Cavani caught a long ball from Hugo Campagnero, wearing a plastic bag on his head, owing to a bloody head injury, and set Lavezzi up for his second of the evening.
Chelsea now have it all to do at Stamford Bridge in the second leg. However, the Blues' success may hinge on the return of John Terry; it would be difficult to deny that his absence has coincided with a slump in the Londoners' form.
