With losing Fabregas then the Newcastle draw being a supposed upset, losing 2-0 to Liverpool then Na$ri days after, and then the worst defeat in the club's history to Manchester United, have Arsenal bounced back from the worst start to the season ever? Or should we be better than we are now?
First of all, look where Newcastle are now, they are sixth in place and two points behind us. So, considering we just lost Cesc and we were away to arguably one of the best crowds in England, it was a decent result as Newcastle have beaten the likes of Manchester United 3-0, Everton 2-1 and Aston Villa 2-1 all at home, so it really wasn't a bad result. Considering we lost Cesc days before, Gervinho really should've had a penalty and Joey Barton falling over like a 3 year old on a bouncy castle.
After that, the players heads weren't where they should be with Gervinho having a 3 match ban for slapping Joey Barton (Legend), Alex Song having a 3 match ban for stamping on Joey Barton's leg (Legend). While Samir Nasri was heavily linked with Manchester City and Kieran Gibbs suffering from a hamstring injury, we had to play Emanuel Frimpong who was very inexperienced, new boy Carl Jenkinson and Sagna on the left, along with Arshavin playing, the game was always going to be hard for us and we lost 2-0 to two late goals.
Samir left us 3 days after the loss and with the Manchester United game only a few days to go, who were Arsenal going to field in the middle? There were even talks of Djourou going in to the midfield with Frimpong. But even more injuries were occurring as Thomas Vermaelen suffered an ankle injury and Sagan being ill, and the question on every ones lips was who is Wenger going to field? And the shocking line-up was;
Szczesny
Djourou Koscielny
Jenkinson Traore
Coquelin Rosicky
Walcott Ramsey Arshavin
van Persie
Everyone knew we were going to lose, but 8-2? Every Arsenal fan in the world was distraught, and wherever you went, whether you were going school, work, college or even down the shops, you would get someone laughing at you because your team was destroyed. Am I right?
Transfer deadline day was approaching and lots of names were coming up on everyone's lips, from the likes of Benzema to Hazard to Kaka and so on. So who was Wenger going to bring in? The day before deadline day, he bought a 26 year-old from Monaco who no-one had ever heard of called Park-Chu Young. Another disappointing acquisition from Wenger.
But deadline day passed and this is who Wenger bought:-
Mikel Arteta:
Mikel Arteta was bought in from Everton for around a fee of £10 million, the Spaniard has been arguably our best player of the season (excluding Robin van Persie) and the "brick" of our midfield, passing the ball over 1500 times in 19 games for the Gunners and scoring four goals.
Per Mertesacker:
Per Mertesacker, a German international defender who Arsenal brought from Werder Bremen for around £8 million. Wenger wanted to get him the year before, but he got a terrible injury at Werder Bremen so he had to stay.
He stands at 6' 6", and is finally starting to settle in at the Emirates after conceding easy goals and being run past like a parked car in his first few months. Although currently injured, Per is already loved by the majority of Arsenal fans.
Andre Santos:
Andre Santos, joined Arsenal from Fenerbache for around £6 million, a slow left-back who has been described as a good attacker, but poor at defensive duties.
Santos has actually been a hit at Arsenal since Kieran Gibbs suffered a hernia injury to his back, scoring a goal v Chelsea and the winner v Olympiacos.
My only criticism is that he needs to learn the offside trap.
Yossi Benayoun:
Yossi Benayoun (Loan), joined Arsenal after failing to get into the Chelsea first team after joining from Liverpool in July of 2010. Benayoun is actually a really good player, but couldn't get into Chelsea team because he isn't a Chelsea type of player.
However, he is an Arsenal player as he is small, quick and a fine passer of the ball. But he hasn't fit in to the Arsenal team either starting only two Premier League matches coming off the bench 9 times, although he did score the winner against Aston Villa.
Gervinho:
Gervinho joined Arsenal from French side LOSC Lille for around £11 million and the winger has settled straight into the first team contributing towards nine goals, scoring four and setting up five more.
Although he has been frustrating at times, almost every single Arsenal fan prefers him over Arshavin.
The Ox:
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a young English winger is Arsenal's brightest prospect, who joined from Southampton for £12 million and is loved by literally every single Arsenal and England fan. He is very exciting on the ball and even commits to tracking back and defending. The U-21 International has scored two goals in nine shots in his six games during the Premier League.
Although these results occurred, we did qualify for the Champions League after Szczesny saved a £20 million penalty! Results started coming our way after a 1-0 win against Swansea and a 1-1 draw away to German champions Borussia Dortmund. But then another loss to Blackburn 4-3 who were also on a bad run and again, should've had another penalty in the dying seconds after Robinson tripped Theo Walcott.
After this loss, we started picking up more victories in a 3-1 win over Shrewsbury, 3-0 win over Bolton and a 2-1 win over Olympiacos, but again lost to Tottenham 2-1. This loss to Spurs was going to be our last loss for 11 games beating the likes of Chelsea away, Marsielle away and Borussia Dortmund. But lost again to Manchester City and went out in the Carling Cup.
We then beat Wigan 4-0, but lost to Olympiacos 3-1. These results have occurred all season and it is all down to one thing; inconsistency.
We have been inconsistent all season winning games against Chelsea 5-3, but losing to Swansea, why have we been so inconsistent? Maybe because we don't have someone in the backroom staff like Tony Adams or Dennis Bergkamp? None of us know the real reason, but it seems as if we bottle it against the big teams, losing to the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City and Manchester United.
Has the 8-2 destroying really gone out of our heads? When you look at the Sunderland game, it takes us to go a goal down to realize we need to try to win the game. A good example of this is the comeback against Aston Villa, coming back from 2-0 to win 3-2.
But, is the Blackburn thrashing and the comeback against Sunderland a start of something? With the King, making everyone feel on top of the world with his presence and supposedly making the dressing room fun to be in, along with the return of several sidelined players could be the start of something for the Gunners.
Let's see what happens in the AC Milan game and then we can judge what will really happen as this is our biggest test so far.
Come on Arsenal!!
