As Arsenal fans, we don’t expect big signings during the opportune time of the transfer windows. However, rumours and speculation are always rife and this summer should be no different. We all dream of waking up on a Saturday morning, turning on Sky Sports News, and seeing Wenger being pictured with a star.
As unlikely as it is, it is always nice to dream, and we Arsenal fans know all about that. Let’s talk about possible transfers and what we can expect to see this summer.
Many fans have been asking for the signing of Jan Vertonghen. The versatile Belgian currently plies his trade either through the centre of defence or at left-back for his club, Ajax, and for his national side.
Highly rated, the 24-year old stands at 6ft 2 in, and has been likened to our very own Thomas Vermaelen. The two occupied the back line for Dutch side Ajax, before Wenger brought TV5 to the Emirates.
To be fair, Vertonghen would be a good addition to the squad, but Wenger has a lot of faith in Johan Djourou and with the way Laurent Koscielny is performing, I can only see Vertonghen being an addition to the squad albeit in front of Djourou, and not starting ahead of his fellow countryman and vice-captain Thomas Vermaelen. We also have Mertesacker, who seems to have started to settle down, and out injured.
So I cannot see Le Prof investing in a defender come summer, but who knows? This is football and anything can happen.
Three players that seem to be heavily mentioned are Mario Gotze, Eden Hazard and Christian Eriksen. So, let’s take a closer look at these players and their qualities, and also what they could bring to the Gunners:
Mario Gotze:
Mario Gotze is a 19-year old German international who is currently employed by Borrusia Dortmund. He has been likened to Jack Wilshere, to be mentioned in the same breath he must be world class.
A hard tackler, an expert passer, a great dribbler and an eye for goal, makes Gotze, one of the most sought after young players in the world.
However, Gotze has not made any intentions of leaving Dortmund, and after revealing that he would be open to contract talks, Gotze would cost somewhere in the £25-£30m.
Wenger has always said that he would pay the right price for a player that he could see bringing quality to the side; is Gotze this player? It would be amazing to see his partnership with Wilshere develop, and at such a young age with such great quality, this could be the most dominant midfield partnership for years to come.
Eden Hazard:
Eden Hazard is known for his creativity, speed, and technical ability and is described as a "fearless, explosive attacking midfielder who can change the game with a turn of pace or a dribble." He is usually deployed as a left winger for his club LOSC Lille, but can play on the right or just behind a main striker.
The Belgian international is known to be arrogant and has spoken openly about his future, where he has named a handful of clubs and seems to constantly change his mind. The latest team that the dynamic attacker has blurted out during an interview is our long-hated arch rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
As unlikely as this deal seems, considering Tottenham’s approach to wages and transfer fees, it is still very vomit-provoking to hear a player call the Spuds a ‘great’ club.
Hazard can be inconsistent at times and is at his best down the left wing, meaning that, if Wenger was to pay his estimated £35m price tag, this would affect the progress of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ryo Miyaichi.
I know who I’d prefer down the left wing, and it’s not someone that calls Tottenham, "a great club."
Christian Eriksen:
The Danish ‘Wonderkid’ has been on Wenger’s radar for a very long time now, and it is clear why. The attacking midfielder has great vision, excellent passing abilities, jaw dropping dribbling skills and a powerful long-range shot.
In 2011, he was named Dutch Football Talent of the Year as well as Danish Football Player of the Year. The Ajax midfielder can cut defences apart with his through balls and creativity, something Arsenal seem to be lacking a bit this season.
Eriksen, for me, is the perfect addition to the Arsenal squad. Young, hard working, and creative, Eriksen seems like the missing puzzle in an already very talented squad. He will not cost as much as the others and genuinely seems very talented. Wenger is known for trusting in youth and hopefully he can pull this off.
Bring on the summer.
